Making Sure Your Shed is Level – Having a shed that is level is essential to its usefulness, durability, and longevity. With time your shed will settle and if your shed is not level it is not it’s most structurally sound. If the shed is not level things like the floor will slant or the door will not hang properly which will eventually cause bigger issues.

It can be overwhelming and frustrating if you do not have experience figuring out how to level out a shed. But there are some systemic steps to take to make sure that the foundation of the shed is level to avoid anything being off-kilter and causing structural issues later on.

It is important to set up a shed foundation very carefully by following all of the proper steps exactly. The steps are fairly simple as long as you make sure to pay attention to the details.

Choosing the best spot for the shed

Though it may seem like you can stick a shed anywhere in your yard it is best to choose the most fitting location. You want to make sure you find a spot with a relatively flat surface that remains drier than other areas with plenty of open space surrounding it.

Your spot does not have to be perfectly flat but to make the following steps easier you want to find the area with the least amount of slope possible. You also want to make sure that you are not going to be putting a shed in an area where water tends to collect. Ideally, you should have at least 3 feet of space between the shed and any other structure on the property.

Decide on your foundation type

Most often sheds are placed on block foundations. If you choose this route most custom qualities shed builders will include this foundation with your shed. You could also choose a permanent concrete foundation. Many times shed builders will require you to have this in place before the shed is brought to the property.

With a block foundation, one concrete block will be used at each corner with a series of four by fours stretching across each block to the next to begin and prepare for laying the framework of the floor. This is done by first measuring out the correct space by using steaks and a string to make sure everything is perfectly square. To lay a concrete foundation you will want to build a box that you will then be able to pour the concrete into.

Measurements are crucial

It is not uncommon for people to get impatient and rush the measurements of making sure that their area is square when laying the stakes and the line for guides. This is why it is a great idea to hire a company that will take care of the foundation for you by including the step of the setup in the price of your shed. Or in the case of a permanent slab foundation, hire a concrete pro before the shed comes.
