Whether you already have a garage and are looking for additional space, or your home is without a garage and you are exploring your options, a detached garage may be the perfect solution. Here are a few reasons why.

1. Detached garages are easier to add than attached garages

5 Reasons to Consider a Detached Garage

The addition of an attached garage requires far more permitting, planning, time, and money than a detached garage. You can enjoy most of the same benefits from an attached garage, including increased resale value, storage, and convenience, without the time and investment required for an attached garage addition.

2. There are more location options with a detached garage

Detached garages can be places anywhere on the property that accommodates the space, generally somewhere that can also accommodate a driveway if you plan to park a vehicle in the garage. This means you can place them wherever makes the most sense for your life and the way you use the property, while an attached garage will only be able to be placed where permits and building codes allow.

Some people enjoy placing their detached garages behind the home, not visible from the street but sometimes more accessible from the home, depending on a variety of factors relevant to the specific floor plan.

When choosing the location for your detached garage, ask yourself how you plan to use the space. Parking a vehicle may be the primary reason, but you may also be planning to use it as an outdoor workout space or primarily as additional storage to free up space in the home.

3. Detached garages offer unique future opportunities

When you choose a detached garage, you keep your options open for the future. Many people find that they would like to add a garden shed, pool house, or studio on to the garage at some point down the road. While this is possible with an attached garage, the process will be much simpler with a detached garage.

Our mini cabins can be easily added onto our detached garages, allowing you to build onto the property as time and budget allow, slowly transforming your home into your dream property.

4. Fire safety is an inherent benefit of detached garages

Garages are home to many of the top fire hazards in a home: lawn mowers, gas cans, flammable paints and cleaners, and more. While fire safety measure should always be taken to avoid any fires, should an unfortunate emergency take place a detached garage will provide additional protection for the home by being separated from the residence.

5. Detached garages can be added to a wider range of homes

Adding an attached garage to a home is a far more complex process than placing a detached garage on the property. For a detached garage, all you need is enough space on the property to accommodate the structure, while an attached garage will require hiring contractors, taking building code into account, and more.
